City of the thousand is the nickname given by Garibaldi itself to the city of Bergamo, and it is proudly conserved nowadays, both in the gonfalon and in the city’s signs.

So many citizens, from different social classes, left from Bergamo and its district to follow Garibaldi, even more than his effective troops. Infact, a recruitment center was fitted out in a theatre, with the purpose of selecting the more valiant young men.

We all know the end of this very important event happened during the Italian Unification (Risorgimento) and it seems that even Garibaldi’s statue, with his fierce glance, wants us to remind it.
